Records show that racing was first held in the area in 1847, with that first meeting being held in September, although it was not held on the present day course but at Jetty Flat.

By 1855 the present racecourse was developed and held its inaugural meeting in March 1858. This was a steeplechase meeting and the first race was won by The Rambler which was owned by Mr Bostock.

The famous principal race is the Grand Annual Steeplechase run over 5500 metres and first run in 1872. After being renamed a few times it reverted to Grand Annual in 1895.
Famously in 1909 and again in 1934 all of the runners fell.
