SUNDERLAND STARS BADGES 1964 - 2022 I am grateful to John Somerville for allowing access to his incredible collection. 		Speedway was quite late coming to Sunderland with the first meeting being held in 1964. The venue was the Greyhound Stadium in East Bolden and that first meeting was held on 21st April 1964. It was not to be a successful first encounter when Sunderland lost to their fiercest near neighbours Newcastle 44-32. The team contested the Provincial League in 1964 but falling crowds meant the team did not continue for a second season. Speedway returned in 1971 when the team joined the second tier of the British League and remained in place for the next 3 years.

Sunderland has always been a popular area for promoting greyhound racing. The Newcastle Road Greyhound Stadium first held a meeting on 23rd March 1940.
