HAMILTON RACECOURSE |
|
| Approached via the Glenelg Highway or Hamilton
Highway, the Hamilton Racecourse can be found some 185 miles West of Melbourne in
Victoria. |
| |
The town can boast racing history dating back to 1844 when
the Hamilton Turf Club organised the inaugural meeting on 17th March of that year. |
|
| By the 1850s two day meetings were organised
in December, although interest then began to wane. The Turf Club were replaced by the
Western Racing Club in the mid-1860s and racing moved to its current site on Cavendish
Road. |
| |
It was in 1883 that the present day Hamilton Racing Club
was formed and organised their first meeting in April 1884.The programme included the
first running of the Hamilton Cup and it has been run ever since. |
