GREAT WESTERN RACECOURSE |
|
| Approached via the Western Highway, the Great
Western Racecourse is about 140 miles North of Melbourne in Victoria. |
| |
Racing was first witnessed in the Great Western area in
1877, although it is known that an early meeting took place in 1859. |
|
| The course gained notoriety in 1860 for an
incident involving a horse called Punch which seemed likely to overturn the favourite
Black Boy until the crowd intervened. The judge seemed powerless to make a decision about
whether Punch should be awarded the race or Black Boy keep it. |
