GREAT WESTERN RACECOURSE
Approached via the Western Highway, the Great Western Racecourse is about 140 miles North of Melbourne in Victoria.
Racing was first witnessed in the Great Western area in 1877, although it is known that an early meeting took place in 1859.

The course gained notoriety in 1860 for an incident involving a horse called Punch which seemed likely to overturn the favourite Black Boy until the crowd intervened. The judge seemed powerless to make a decision about whether Punch should be awarded the race or Black Boy keep it.
