The Riccarton racecourse is situated in the suburbs of Christchurch, Canterbury on South Island and first witnessed racing in the area in 1851 on 16th December.
  The Riccarton racecourse has been in existence since 1870 when it hosted the New Zealand Cup. The track hosts both flat and jumps racing. Both the Canterbury Jockey Club and Hororata Racing Club hold meets at the track.

 

 
Riccarton has the flexibility to offer flat and jump racing and its steeplechase races include the prestigious Grand National and Grand National Hurdles races which take place in August. On 9th August 2008 Just A Swagger was successful when piloted by Brett Scott.
  The New Zealand 2000 Guineas is run at the racecourse each November. In 2008 it was sponsored by First Sovereign Trust and was contested on Saturday 15th November. It was to prove successful for Tell a Tale ridden by Troy Harris who got the better of Il Quello Veloce.

The 1000 Guineas had been run the previous Saturday, 8th November, and was won by Daffodil ridden by Hayden Tinsley.
