HASTINGS RACECOURSE
Situated on North Island and home to the Hawkes Bay Racing Club, it is known that racing has taken place since 1845. However, those first meetings took place at the Napier racecourse at Greenmeadows. This continued to be a racecourse venue until its closure in 1961.
Its principal race is the Capital Stakes, a Group One race over 2040 metres which was contested for the first time in 1955 when won by Redcraze.

In 1960 and 1961 Picaroon won back to back Capital Stakes, and between 1969 and 1971 Game bettered this with a trio of successes.
The 2007 winner was Princess Coup who retained the tital in 2008.
