It was on 24th May 1921 that Clairwood Racecourse, near Durban, held its first meeting. Remarkably, the course is built on what was, at one time, a swamp and yet now exists as one of the most picturesque courses in South Africa.
During the War the course was used by the military and closed its doors to racing from 1942 until May 1945.

In the early 1970's the owners of Clairwood Turf Club sold their interest in the course to Natal Racecourse Development Fund.
The principal race at the meeting was the Clairwood Winter Handicap which underwent 2 name changes before becoming the Champions Cup, won in 2006 by Equal Image. It also hosts the Gold Circle Natal Derby.
