Greyhound racing first came to Newcastle in 1928 when, on the 23rd June, Brough Park hosted its first meeting with the track situated at 1° 33' W 54° 58' N . Greyhound racing is still popular in the North East today and Gosforth Park also holds a regular meeting. The sanded track has a circumference of just under 400 metres (438 yards), although prior to 1980 the greyhounds ran on a grass surface. In 1931 they held races on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday evenings. There was a Members Club consisting of Bar, Lounge, Super Room and Dance Room, for which the annual subscription was just 10 shillings. In the early days the Principal race was the Northumberland Cup over 500 yards which, in 1931 was held on 12th December and won by Dee Tern in 29.58 secs. The value to the winner of this prestigious race was £143 10 shillings. The most prestigious race to be held annually at the circuit is the All England Cup which was first contested at the track in 1938, although in 1946 the English Geyhound Derby winner Monday's News was successful.
