THE FINAL
Future Cutlet, the odds-on favourite from Trap 5, led with Wild Woolley from the boxes and managed to gain a first bend lead. He railed closely, forcing Wild Woolley to run wide but keeping in touch. By the third bend Wild was back on terms and took the lead as they left the third bend behind. He maintained this slender lead right up to the line, winning by a neck from Future Cutlet. Fret Not led the rest at a respectable 10 lengths behind the 2 leaders.
Many thanks to Richard English for this oh so rare scan of the 1932 racecard from his unique collection.
The racecard shown above is the second semi-final of the 1932 Laurels featuring Beef Cutlet and Seldom Led. After winning his first round heat, Beef Cutlet won this semi in 28.77 when defeating Derek f by 2 1/2 Lengths, with Seldom Led back in third. Beef Cutlet went on to win the final, again beating Derek f, but this time by 4 1/2 Lengths in a track record time 28.47. The race was worth a massive £1100 to the winner, which was more than Wild Woolley received when winning the Derby two months earlier. Beef Cultlet went on to make the Derby final the following year, Seldom Led had already won the previous years’ Derby. Grateful thanks to Tony Nash for the scan and information. |

The first official running of the Irish Greyhound Derby was held not at Harolds Cross but across the city at Shelbourne Park.
Semi Finals: The 3 Semi Finals were contested on different nights some days apart. On the 3rd August Castleve beat The Singer by 4 lengths in 30.51. On the 6th August the second Semi Final took place and resulted in a win for Malhoe Man by a length from Master Chant. On the 8th August Guidless Joe was made the 1/3 favourite but was beaten a length by Silver Sail.
Final: Guidless Joe was made the 7/4 favourite despite suffering a defeat in his semi final. He missed the break at the boxes and was led around the first bend by The Singer. He took it up down the back straight and was able to hold off the late challenge of Malhoe Man by a fast diminidhing neck. The winner was owned by Jack Moylan, grandfather of the famous jockey Pat Eddery.
